The most important thing you need to do as a Spy is appear to be a Citizen. Duh! One way to do so would be just to look at ways others appear as Citizens and copy that, but that is easier said and done.
It is important to realize that the name of the game is not 'avoid being suspected as a Spy,' because just doing that will be the death of you. You must be suspected as a Citizen, and that means doing things Citizens would do.
*ALL* Spies must use this piece of advice, and how successful you are is in large part due to how well you follow this guideline.
Important: DO NOT BE THE STEREOTYPICAL "mysterious" "hanging back" "crafty" "charming" "reactionary" Spy that only responds to things that happen to you and only wants to deflect Spy suspicions. Don't be afraid to take action. Citizens, by their very definition ACT. You must too. That's all a Citizen does - act, many times strangely, on things that happen in the game. Do not sit back and wait for things to happen to you, you will lose. You must convince yourself that you are a citizen and that you are actually searching for Spies. It is crucial that you make up Spy suspects and have a list of your suspects constantly and look for evidence to support that.
DO NOT sit around (this means like during the course of the game, not necessarily in the first few episodes right off the bat) and wait for things to happen. Create pushes on suspects. Act. Do something random out of the blue and point fingers at someone. That's what Citizens do.
Don't be wishy-washy and play both sides. Make a decision and stick with it for the time being. Do not refuse to make decisions. Citizens are weird. They're wrong a lot of the time. They do stupid things. They say stupid stuff. They make a lot of bad assumptions. Many times they think they are right even when others say they are wrong.
Sometimes they self-vote. Sometimes they trust people with little reason. Sometimes they have attitudes or get moody. Sometimes they spill their secrets. Sometimes they have roles. Sometimes they get frustrated with how the game is going. Other times they lay back and disappear.
Do these things! Even the most "logical" of Citizens has a personality. Play from your heart and just let the words flow.
You have a wealth of information from the game as to what actions people think is Spy-ish and what actions/events people think are Citizen-ish. Watch what other people to do become suspicious as Spies and avoid it. Watch for the little things people to do become confirmed Citizens and copy it.
You need to have Spy suspects for your Citizen persona. You should constantly have a list of people that your character thinks are Spies. This list should change. Look for people who feel suspicious and tell other people about your suspicions.
You should always remember your list of people you think are Spies and act like that is how you feel. Remember, you are a Citizen and you want the Spies gone. Not all Spies have to be coordinated. In fact it's sometimes better if you are all in different directions aiming at different things. However you should talk with each other here, sharing information and plotting out future strategies.

Brainwash yourself into thinking you are a Citizen. Actually believe you are a Citizen playing this game. Make yourself believe it. Once you believe you are a Citizen, you will act like a Citizen. Get yourself scared at Imprisonment time (since Citizens are frightened of being eliminated.) Constantly be thinking up strategies to find Spies and talk with other players enacting these strategies. ACT. This is not the Mole. You don't hide under the radar and try to not to be suspected as a Spy, that doesn't work. Become suspected as a Citizen.
You should yourself believe that you are Citizen and then take actions as if you were a Citizen. That includes being short or choppy-sounding with other players because you Player Persona suspects them as a Spy. Not all Citizens are perfect 24/7 - they have emotions and imperfections too, go with it! Citizens have different feelings towards other players, make your Citizen role have those feelings. Citizens get antsy around Imprisonment time and may act to save themselves from that - you should too. Citizens have a reaction to Exiling Citizens - have that same reaction too. If you believe you are a Citizen and act as if you were a Citizen (it's hard, I know) it will help.
Then again don't go too far off the deep end. You will need to reign this in with the knowledge that you are actually a Spy and you need to keep yourself and your cohorts in the game with you. You also need to enact and achieve goals which further you as a Spy... while you are a Citizen.
